A community member shares joy through the magic of bubble making
(January 10, 2021)

VCU’s student publication The Commonwealth Times has been extraordinary this past year, shining light in places where corporate journalism hesitated to tread.

I barely knew CT existed until last year, but soon found out that in order to learn exactly what was happening in the streets of Richmond after the local newspapers and television outlets went home, I’d have to follow the Twitter accounts of The Commonwealth Times reporters.

Frequently, the more corporate news outlets borrowed (and perhaps even lifted?) the reportage of independent journalists and student journalists.

It was from following this coverage that I became aware of the brutalization, the overpolicing, and the complete waste of taxpayer money being spent on harassing and intimidating people exercising their free speech rights.

It was through this coverage that I became aware of the need to defund the police and reimagine community safety.

Since then I’ve been lucky to meet at least one student photographer who does beautiful work and, in full disclosure, has photographed me for CT.
