It is painful and discomfiting to type these words:

White supremacist and domestic terror groups have infiltrated law enforcement across this nation.

And as much as we see the evidence right in front of our eyes, it still feels wrong and "disrespectful" to interrogate this phenomenon.

As a Black woman, I have known or strongly suspected this might be the case for many years. Black people occasionally discuss amongst themselves - in a gallows humor fashion - that, of course, police departments are sloppy with white supremacists.

The deeply entrenched, normalized racism of law enforcement is obvious to anyone who has followed the history of extrajudicial executions in the United States.

To say the the brunt of this human rights abuse falls disproportionately on young Black men is a grotesque understatement.

Black people are up to 6 times more likely to be killed by police, Harvard study says - MarketWatch

But I never in my wildest imaginings did I conjure the image of current and retired law enforcement personnel "storming" the Capitol and violently attacking their comrades, bludgeoning one of them to death and coming close to murdering 50 others.

"...military and law enforcement agencies have long known that active-duty recruitment by the far right was an issue....There's no doubt in my mind that we have a problem of white supremacy and extremism in law enforcement and the military,"  - Elizabeth Neumann (assistant secretary for threat prevention and security policy at the Department of Homeland Security until she resigned last April [Law enforcement and the military probing whether their members took part in Capitol riot (aol.com)]
