Signs
On Monday (January 25, 2021), as the fencing went up, my friend A. tearfully called MDP Circle “the most beautiful place in America...a place of liberation and community.”
The community organically reclaimed and renamed this space, this circle.

Early summer, 2020
The demands remain the same:
Drop all charges against protestors;
re-open the Marcus-David Peters case,
re-open the Marco Loney case;
re-open the Jeremy Gilliam case;
remove all vestiges of monuments to white supremacy.
Defund and demilitarize the police.
Ban all weapons of war.
Evict the Daughters of the Confederacy.
End qualified immunity.
Implement a genuine, funded Marcus Alert.
Investigate white supremacist ties and affiliations in RPD
and Virginia State police.

August 16, 2020, after the 2nd (3rd?) sign was chopped down by the “Southern heritage” (i.e.white supremacist) group the Virginia Flaggers
.
Some wonderful community member immediately reinstalled signage after the Virginia flaggers chainsawed down the beautiful sign that has been here.
August 30, 2020 - Community stepped in to fundraise for a beautiful, indestructible, permanent replacement sign.
Marcus-David’s sister and niece seemed pleased with it.
White supremacists continued to tag it with hateful grafitti.

MDP the night after the fence went up
On the evening of Tuesday, September 8th DSG of Virginia removed the sign memorializing Marcus-David Peters,
a beloved biology teacher,
experiencing a mental health crisis,
shot dead by RPD,
even though he was naked,
And unarmed.
